history

The predecessor of the History Museum was the Metropolitan Museum, which was founded by the city in 1887. The basis of today's collections are Roman finds from the urban area of Budapest. The archaeologist Tibor Nagy , who worked at the museum from 1938 until his retirement in 1973, played a major role in the development of the department of the Roman and Migration Period together with the director of the Aquincum Museum, János Szilágyi , in 1952 and 1953, by merging the two institutions, he built up the archaeological department in its current basic structure.

Stocks

On the upper floors of the museum, the development of Budapest and its districts Buda , Óbuda and Pest , which were independent until 1873 , from the Paleolithic and Roman times to the end of the Second World War are shown. The various exhibits, including handicrafts and handicrafts, textiles, ceramics, photographs, household items and other everyday objects, provide a broad overview of the development of the city.

In addition, the remains of the medieval palace can be found here, on the place of which the current castle palace stands. You can also see works of art and other objects that were found during excavations on the grounds of the castle palace. For the sake of clarity, a model of the original palace has been set up in the vestibule of the basement, giving a relatively good idea of the dimensions of the complex. Various other, partly reconstructed rooms of the medieval castle are connected to the vestibule, in which sculptures, painted stove tiles, kitchen utensils and weapons from around the 14th and 15th centuries are exhibited.

The double sculpture Háború és Béke (War and Peace) in front of the entrance is by Károly Senyei .
