Ferenc Fülep

Ferenc Fülep (also Franz Fülep ; born August 5, 1919 in Szerencs , Semplin County , Hungary ; † May 8, 1986 in Páty , Pest County ) was a Hungarian archaeologist and museum director.

Live and act

Ferenc Fülep comes from a family with nine children. With interruptions due to the Second World War , he studied archeology at the University of Debrecen under István Paulovics and received his doctorate in 1946 .

From 1947 to 1949 he headed the museum in Székesfehérvár , after which he became an employee of the National Supervisory Authority for Public Collections (Közgyűjtemények Országos Felügyelőségének) in Budapest and then a member of the Hungarian Science Council (Magyar Tudományos Tanács). From 1949 to 1951 he was secretary of the Archaeological Commission of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1951 he became the deputy general director of the Historical Museum in Budapest, and from 1953 to 1955 he was the head of the educational department of the museum. From 1951 until his death he was General Director of the Hungarian National Museum .

Ferenc Fülep's main areas of work and research were provincial Roman archeology , in particular the province of Pannonia and the Roman period of Pécs . He attached particular importance to monument protection .

In the 1930s he took part in excavations in Contra Aquincum with Alice Sz. Burger . From 1949 he was working in the Campona fort near Nagytétényi (= Großteting), a district of today's XXII. District of Budapest , which he started with István Paulovics and continued after his death in 1952. In 1960 he completed his field research with an extensive excavation. In 1960 and 1961 he took part in work on the Almásfüzitő Fort , and from 1961 to 1963 he led excavations near Nagyharsány .

From 1955 he was also involved in excavations in the early Christian cemetery in Pécs . In 1964 he opened the Korsó burial chambers (burial chambers with the jug), which had already been discovered in the 18th century. In 1975 and 1976 the excavation and restoration of the early Christian mausoleum took place under his direction.

He was deputy chairman of the Hungarian UNESCO committee and from 1955 president of the Hungarian committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). In the international ICOM, he was a co-opted member of the Executive Board from 1969 to 1971 and President of the ICMAH (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Archeology and History) from 1977 to 1983. He was a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMS), where he helped found the ICMAH group in 1985. In 2008 he was accepted into the ICOMS pantheon.

Ferenc Fülep was editor of the yearbook of the Hungarian National Museum (1957 to 1986), the Archaeologiai Értesítő (Archaeological News) and, from 1960, the Folia Archaeologia . In 1985 he was awarded the "Scientific Research Prize" (Tudományos kutatói díj) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Ferenc Fülep died in Páty in 1986 at the age of 66 . His grave is on the Farkasréti temető in the XII. District of Budapest .
