Károly Senyei (also Károly Schmidt or Karl Schmidt ; born January 15, 1854 in Pest , Kingdom of Hungary , † February 7, 1919 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian sculptor .

Károly Senyei was the son of a teacher. He studied in Budapest, Vienna and from 1883 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1886 he returned to Budapest.

Senyei mainly created building sculptures and worked with well-known architects such as Alajos Hauszmann and Albert Schickedanz . His most famous works include the Triga (1896) in front of the Budapest Ethnographic Museum and the statues of Kings Stephan I (Szent István, 1911) and Andrew II (II. Endres, 1912), which he designed for the Millennium Monument in Budapest.

He made a marble statue of St. Elisabeth (1890s) for the St. Stephen's Basilica and four Carrara marble busts of King Charles III for the Habsburg Hall in the north wing of the castle palace . , Maria Theresa , Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary . In front of the Budapest History Museum is his double sculpture Háború és Béke (War and Peace). For the palatine crypt in the castle palace, he designed a statue for the sarcophagus of the great-granddaughter Gizella (1897–1901) of Archduke Joseph of Austria .

He designed fountains for Vigadó Square (two fishing children, 1896) and for the castle palace ( Halaszo fiu fountain , three children with a fish, 1912).

Senyei completed a statue of Johann Pálffy , which was started by Ferenc Szárnovszky and which was not completed due to a nervous problem. The work was set up in Budapest in 1905.

Károly Senyei is an important Hungarian representative of late historicism , with influences from neo-baroque and naturalism . Some of his works are in the Hungarian National Gallery , the History Museum and the Kiscelli Museum in Budapest.
