Live and act
Ferenc Szárnovszky was the son of a tailor. From 1885 he studied first as a guest at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and from 1886 on a scholarship at the General Sculpture School under Edmund von Hellmer . In 1887 he went to Paris , was trained at the Académie Julian by Henri Chapu , among others , attended the École des Beaux-Arts and worked in the studios of Alexandre Falguière , Louis-Ernest Barrias and Denys Puech . In 1890 he worked for Joseph Boehm in London .
Szárnovszky initially worked primarily as a medalist and belonged to Ede Telcs and Fülöp Ö. Beck to the pioneers of the Hungarian art of medalists. One of his first works was a commemorative medal for the poet and revolutionary Sándor Petőfi , which was created in the late 1880s. In 1892 he won a prize from the Budapest Arts and Crafts Association with a portrait medal by Szent László . In the same year he designed the Koronázási jubileumi érem medal on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the coronation of Franz Joseph I as Hungarian Emperor. In 1896 he designed the gold medal Iparművészeti Múzeum nagy állami aranyérmét for the Hungarian Museum of Applied Arts . He also designed other portrait medals of Gyula Benczúr (1895), Mihály von Munkácsy (bronze plaque, 1897), Jenő Hubay (1898), Miklós Ybl (1899) and József Katona (around 1900).
From the mid-1890s onwards, he increasingly turned to sculpture. Around 1894 he designed sculptures for the Hungarian kings Stephan IV , Béla III and Ladislaus III for the parliament building in Budapest . executed by István Tóth and József Haraszti until 1905. He began work on the statue of the poet János Garay , which was unveiled in Szekszárd in 1898 and is considered to be his main work. He was then commissioned to design a statue of Johann Pálffy , but his first designs were rejected. Later he was unable to complete his work because of a nervous problem. The work was done by Károly Senyei and the statue was erected in Budapest in 1905.
Ferenc Szárnovszky committed suicide in 1903 because of his worsening nervous disease . Parts of his work are in the Hungarian National Gallery .
