József Katona (born November 11, 1791 in Kecskemét , † May 16, 1830 in Kecskemét) was a Hungarian playwright .

Life

József Katona studied law , became a lawyer in 1810 and treasurer of the city of Kecskemét in 1821 .

In addition to other dramas, he wrote the tragedy Bánk Bán, in German: Banus Bánk , which is still on the repertoire of the Hungarian stages (first German by Adolf Dux , Leipzig 1858). He translated numerous works from German into Hungarian. A theater in Budapest is named after him.
