The historic city wall festival in Nördlingen takes place every three years on a weekend in September. The city is car-free from Friday to Sunday, and a paving duty is levied at the city gates , just like in the old days . Under the motto “A city experiences its history”, the city will be transported back to the Middle Ages during the festival .

history

The first “Citizens' Festival” in 1977 was intended to commemorate the 650th anniversary of the Nördlinger weir system . Other festivals followed in 1979, 1981 and 1983.

In 1984 the festival commemorated the 350th anniversary of the Battle of Nördlingen and was entitled “Nördlingen 1634 to 1984 - a city experiences its history ”. From 1987 onwards, the city wall festival was given the final name Historisches Stadtmauerfest , which has been held every three years since then. In 1998 the festival was brought forward on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of Nördlingen.

The supraregional importance of the festival is shown, among other things, by the prominent patrons from Bavarian state politics. In 2004, the city wall festival under the patronage of Monika Hohlmeier attracted more than 60,000 visitors. In 2007 the festival took place between September 14th and 16th under the patronage of Barbara Stamm , around 70,000 visitors were counted. The most recent city wall festival took place on September 9-11, 2016.

The city wall festival traditionally opens on Friday afternoon with music and historical theater performances.

On Saturday the great customs and folklore parade takes place through the old town. Here you can see teams of horses and oxen, hay wagons, wooden wagons and depictions of rural life in the Nördlinger Ries . In 2007, 2000 participants and 40 teams were counted.

The highlight is the historical parade on Sunday, in which only participants in historical costumes take part. The closing event is the big tattoo on the market square on Sunday evening. Various camps have been set up on the various marketplaces within the city wall, showing what went on in the Middle Ages. For this, knight games to medieval music, dance and theater take place, but also historical craftsmen and sutlers find their audience.
