Karl Michael Scheufele

Karl Michael Scheufele (born March 17, 1957 in Augsburg ) is a German administrative lawyer and ministerial official . From September 1, 2008 to mid-April 2018, he was President of the Government of Swabia and has been Head of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior since March 2019 .

Career

After graduating from Peutinger Gymnasium in Augsburg, Scheufele began studying law at the University of Augsburg . After passing the second state examination in law, he joined the government of Swabia on August 1, 1984 in the civil service. Two months later he moved to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, where he initially worked in the state security department and later in the press department. At the end of 1990 he joined the field service at the Günzburg district office .

In February 1992, the Bavarian Environment Minister Peter Gauweiler brought him to his ministry as a personal advisor and head of the ministerial office. From 1998 to 2003 he worked in the State Chancellery in the press, public relations and media department and was appointed Vice President of Swabia on January 1, 2004.

At the suggestion of the Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber , Scheufele returned to the State Chancellery in early 2006 and succeeded Martin Neumeyer in the office of government spokesman. When Günther Beckstein was elected Prime Minister on October 9, 2007, he moved to the Ministry of the Interior as head of the press office.

On June 24, 2008, the Bavarian cabinet appointed him as the successor to Ludwig Schmid, who retired in September 2008, to the office of regional president of Swabia. On April 12, 2018, it became known that Scheufele would move back to the Ministry of the Interior with the rank of ministerial director and take on the responsibility for integration and asylum there. Erwin Lohner , who previously worked in the Ministry of the Interior, has been his successor as District President since May 1, 2018 . On March 14, 2019, he was appointed Head of the Interior Ministry as the successor to Ministerial Director Günter Schuster.

He is married and has two sons.
