history

The Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Ltd. (HGST for short) was created on January 1, 2003 from the merger of the hard drive division taken over from IBM (also based in San José) and the existing hard drive division of Hitachi , which exclusively manufactured 2.5 "notebook hard drives . The takeover closed all model series ( e.g. Deskstar , Travelstar , Ultrastar , Microdrive ), the development department, the manufacturing facilities and all patents. This created the third largest hard disk manufacturer in the world. There was also an extensive patent exchange agreement between HGST and ExcelStor Technology for desktop hard disks.

On March 7, 2011, Western Digital (WDC) announced its intention to acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies for $ 4.3 billion. This acquisition was finally completed on March 8, 2012. Since then, the company has operated under the name HGST as a subsidiary of Western Digital. In May 2012, WDC sold parts of HGST's 3.5 "production to Toshiba under pressure from the antitrust authorities .

In 2014, HGST introduced the first 10 TB hard drive. The high capacity is achieved through helium filling and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). At the end of 2015, a 10 TB hard drive was presented that uses conventional Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) as well as helium filling.
