Hiteshwar Saikia

Hiteshwar Saikia ( Assamese : হিতেশ্বৰ শইকিয়া , Hiteśbar Śaikiẏā ; * 1934 ; † April 22, 1996 ) was an Indian politician and Chief Minister of Assam .

biography

Saikia, who was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC), first became Chief Minister of the northern Indian state of Assam on February 27, 1983 and held this office until December 23, 1985. He was succeeded by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta from Asom Gana Parishad . In 1986 he was appointed lieutenant governor of Mizoram . During his tenure, which lasted until 1989, the office was upgraded to governor in 1987. After a period of President's rule in Assam, he was again Chief Minister of Assam on June 30, 1991 and held this office until his death. His successor was first Bhumidhar Barman and then again PK Mahanta in May 1996.
