Santos high-rise cemetery
The high-rise cemetery Santos ( Portuguese Cemitério vertical or Memorial Necrópole ecuménica ) is a cemetery in a high-rise building in the Marapé district of the Brazilian city of Santos . According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the tallest of its kind in the world with 14 floors.
history
Because of the tropical and subtropical climate, the country on the equator has to be buried within 24 hours. In addition to the increasing lack of suitable area and the overcrowding of cemeteries, this was also the reason for the construction of the memorial in Santos in 1983, which guaranteed a 24-hour opening and offered all services suitable for a burial . Up to the present, when there are high-rise cemeteries in São Paulo , Porto Alegre and Curitiba , Guarulhos , for example , the number of burial sites has increased gradually to 16,000.
The former soccer player and world star Pelé had his parents buried here.
location
The cemetery is close to the center and not far from a city beach on the South Atlantic .
expansion
The intention is to increase the main building, along with the other three houses in the complex, to 32 floors and then 108 meters.
