The Hockerill Anglo-European College is a public boarding school in England . It is located in Bishop's Stortford , roughly halfway between London and Cambridge not far from London Stansted Airport . The school's motto is “Fortuna fortes adiuvat” (Fate helps the brave) and the colors are dark blue and yellow.

history

Hockerill was founded in 1850 as a teacher training center. In 1978 teacher training in Hockerill was given up, and in 1980 Hockerill was reopened as a state boarding school. The school became the Hockerill Anglo-European College in 1998, under the direction of Dr. Robert 'Bob' Guthrie. When Bob Guthrie took over the school, it was on the verge of closure due to poor exam results and declining student numbers. Hockerill is now one of the best language schools in the country and is the only state boarding school in England to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) instead of the A-Levels . Since 2006, in addition to the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the school has also offered the so-called MYP , a program that prepares students for the IB Diploma and is intended to replace the German secondary school leaving certificate or the British GCSE . At the end of the summer term 2009, Dr. Robert 'Bob' Guthrie resigned and retired from all positions. Simon Dennis, former director of the South Wolds School, Keyworth, Nottingham, has since taken over the post.

organization

West elevation of the boys house, Thames House

Around 900 students of British and international origins are currently studying at Hockerill. All five continents are represented with students, whereby the number of English with the international students in the upper school can be compared. Around a quarter of the foreigners are of German origin, the German ambassador is Hockerill's honorary president.

The boarding school students live in four residential buildings, two junior (grades 7–9) and two senior houses (grades 10–13), separated by sex. However, this will change in the next few years, as extensive renovation measures were decided and started this year. The focus here is on rebuilding and expanding the boarding facilities.

The two senior houses Thames and Roding were originally both replicas of English hunting locks ; Roding was hit by a German aerial bomb during World War II and replaced by a new building in the 1950s. Perhaps due to the older building, the boys of the upper school from Thames seem to have developed a stronger awareness of the house for several years - the coat of arms of the house and the motto (Loyalty and Courtesy) have been increasingly used recently.

Academic

In school lessons there are no classes as in Germany, but the grades are divided into "Equipes", each named after a prominent personality in his field: Goethe , Brunel , Pascal and Da Vinci . Every student can collect points for his team through good performance and regularly organized competitions of all kinds. At the end of the summer term, the winning team will be selected and awarded.

The academic school year is counted in terms, i.e. trimesters. The cycle from the start of school until Christmas (October – December) is called Michaelmas Term. The subsequent term (January – March, the shortest of the three) is called Lent, and the academic year ends with the summer term (April – July).

In 2006, Hockerill was named the best public boarding school in Great Britain by the British newspaper The Times (6th place of all schools in Great Britain including private schools). "Four of the schools in the top ten in The Times A level league tables offer the IB. They include Hockerill Anglo-European College in Bishop's Stortford, which is the leading state school in the list. With 496 points and in sixth place, Hockerill, like Sevenoaks, has abandoned the A level. " (" Four of the ten best schools in the Times A-Level ranking offer the IB. One of these is Hockerill Anglo-European College in Bishop's Stortdford, which is the best state school. With a score of 496 points, Hockerill is in 6th place in the ranking and is one of the schools that, like Sevenoaks, have given up the A-level degree in favor of the IB. "The Times, August 26, 2006).

Since 2006 the college has received the second special status of Music College in addition to the special status of Language College . Overall, there are very few schools in England that have the privilege of being able to offer two specializations. The Music College was officially opened in October 2006 by Sir David T. Puttnam .

At the beginning of 2011, Hockerill was awarded Academy status.

Remarkable

  • Russell Brand attended school briefly, but was expelled from school after a year for misconduct
  • Mike Ullman †, head of the language department, was named "Teacher of the Year" by The Guardian in 2005.
