The Hofbrunnwerk in Munich is a hydropower-powered pumping station that supplies the fountains in the Hofgarten .

location

The Hofbrunnwerk is located on the north side of the Lower Hofgarten on the Hirschauterrasse, through which the Munich city streams flow. The pump room of the well is located in the substructure of the Hofgarten arcades , the turbine room adjoins it to the north.

history

When Duke Albrecht V laid out the Lower Court Garden in 1562, a fountain was built to supply the garden and the fountains in it with water at the western end of the arcade that closes off the garden to the north. For the operation of the well, a canal was probably already built back then from the western Stadtgrabenbach.

1615–1617, Albrecht's grandson Maximilian I had the courtyard garden, which is essentially still preserved in its basic structure, on the higher-lying old town terrace to the west of the old garden. On this occasion, the fountain machinery became a Brunnhaus equipped with a water tower, which was also the drinking water supply of the farm and the adjacent urban area.

After the expansion of the residence under Ludwig I , the fountain house at the residence was demolished in 1845 and rebuilt to the east adjacent to the old Hofgarten fountain house. A new canal was created for the water supply to the new fountain house , today's Hofbrunnwerk canal .

Both fountain houses were in operation in parallel until 1857, then Maximilian I's fountain house was shut down. In 1885 the water wheels of the well were replaced by more powerful Girard turbines , which have been preserved to this day.

In 1904, the drinking water supply was stopped because the city of Munich was now getting its drinking water from the Mangfall area via a water pipe. The fountain continued to serve as a water supply for the fountains in the Hofgarten until 1968, when it was shut down and the Hofbrunnwerk canal closed.

As part of the conversion of the old Army Museum into the State Chancellery , in which the Köglmühlbach was rebuilt next to its original bed, the Hofbrunnwerk Canal and the Hofbrunnwerk were also put back into operation in 1991.
