The Hofmann Trough is a lake basin in the Antarctic Weddell Sea . It is not far from the coast of the Coatsland .

Named he's at the suggestion of surveyor and glaciologists Heinrich Hinze from the Alfred Wegener Institute for the German cartographer and Photogrammetristen Walther Hofmann (1920-1993), who from 1962 to 1963 as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program on the Ross Ice Shelf worked and served as chairman of the German Society for Polar Research from 1973 to 1976 . The designation was confirmed in July 1997 by the US Advisory Committee for Undersea Features (ACUF).
