Hogan Bassey (* 3. June 1932 in Calabar , Nigeria ; † 26. January 1998 in Lagos , Nigeria) was a Nigerian boxer in the featherweight .

On June 24, 1957, Bassey won the vacant universal world championship when he defeated the Algerian- born Cherif Hamia in a 15-round fight in the 10th round by technical knockout . On March 18, 1959, he lost this title to Davey Moore . When he lost the rematch against Moore in August of the same year, he ended his career.
