High Bridge (Merseburg)
The Hohe Brücke is a listed bridge in the city of Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20223 .
General
The Hohe Brücke is located in a forest north of Leipziger Straße near the former forester's house and restaurant Fasanerie . Therefore it was also known as the Fasanerie Bridge . It was part of the road from Leipzig via Meuschau through Venenien to Neumarkt . The bridge leads over the river bed of the Alte Saale. It is considered to be the oldest stone bridge over the Saale that has been preserved in its original form.
history
The first documentary mention of the Hohe Brücke dates back to 1283. The current bridge is not the one mentioned at that time, as this bridge was only built in 1577, according to a plaque on the bridge. The establishment is in connection with the expansion of the trade routes by the Saxon Elector August for the new development of the brine springs . The road to the bridge and the pavement on the bridge are said to be stones from the demolished church of the Petri monastery. With the construction of Bundesstrasse 181 , Leipziger Strasse, in 1938, the bridge lost its importance as a traffic structure. It was extensively renovated from 2013 to 2017.
