Beneficiary House

The building was donated in 1429 as a benefactor's house by Duke Ludwig the Bearded of Bavaria-Ingolstadt , whereby the poor housed there were supposed to pray for the duke's salvation. Construction began around 1434, with a dendrochronological analysis of the roof structure dating back to 1435/36. At the foundation, the Bishop of Eichstätt was granted the right to use the building for other, more healing purposes.

University building

Since 1458 there were plans to found a university in Bavaria . When this was built by Ludwig the Rich in 1472 with papal privilege , the Pope and Bishop came back to the possibility of an alternative use of the beneficiary house and assigned it to the young university. From 1472 the beneficiary's house was converted into a university building and was then the seat of the first Bavarian state university from 1503 to 1800. Since the size of the building was soon no longer sufficient, separate buildings were built for individual faculties , such as the anatomy faculty . About fifty years before the university moved from Ingolstadt in 1800, extensive repairs had to be carried out at the Hohe Schule. With the move, the building lost its function as a university building, but the term high school for the building was retained.

school

Even after his university days, the building was a place of education and was mainly used as a school building. For example, it housed the Apian high school between 1971 and 1977 , until it moved to the new building on Maximilianstrasse. As early as the early 1930s, the high school was partially historicized and in the 1990s a comprehensive renovation took place, which enabled the building to be used again.

Todays use

From 2002 to 2013, the premises on the ground floor of the high school were used as a restaurant. In order to preserve the valuable frescoes , it was designed as a non-smoking café from the start. In 2005 the Bavarian Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts decided to move the Center for University Didactics of the Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences (DiZ) to the high school in Ingolstadt. The professors and lecturers of the Bavarian universities of applied sciences have been receiving their didactic training here ever since.

Furthermore, the high school houses the chair for civil law, civil procedure law and insolvency law of the economic faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt , as well as the Ingolstadt office of the IHK .
