In 1277 a Wilhelm von Hohenhagen was granted citizenship in Lennep. In 1487 “op den hagen” is mentioned in a document. In the late Middle Ages, Hohenhagen was the main courtyard of an homonymous honor in the parish of Lüttringhausen and belonged to the Beyenburg office . In 1555 the term "Hoenhegen" (high forest) appeared. In 1893 the Hohenhagen residential area, which previously belonged to the city of Lennep, was incorporated into Remscheid.

During the Second World War , several anti-aircraft positions for Remscheid were posted at Hohenhagen, Buscherhof and the main train station.

Until the 1980s, there was a glider airfield at Hohenhagen, which was spread over two large meadows. Due to a lack of space, it was relocated to Wipperfürth . The meadows have been used for a construction project since 2000, a residential area with apartment buildings and single-family houses is being created.

Some farms used to dominate the picture, but now only two old farms can be seen. There is no longer any main occupation in agriculture.

landscape

Hohenhagen is located on the Brodtberg , which extends over the entire district and the associated residential area Fichtenhöhe. The Teufelsbach rises near the old Hohenhagen farm and flows down into the Müggenbach in a valley cut. At the lower course of the water there is the Teufelsteich, an artificially created standing water that was used as a swimming pool until after the Second World War. The district is characterized above all by its beautiful landscape with meadows and forests. From the television tower you have a good view of the Bergisches Land . In winter there is often a lot of snow and there was even a ski lift. The ski slope stretched down to above the Hermannsmühle.

At the highest point of 378.86 m above sea level is the Remscheid television tower. This can be seen in many parts of Remscheid and was surrounded by a small fir forest for a long time, which was almost completely destroyed by the hurricane on January 18, 2007. Radio and television programs are received via the technical systems on and on the tower and fed into the Remscheid cable network.
