The hollow "Felsenwiese am Kalkofen" is an extensive natural monument in the municipality of Otzberg , Ober-Klingen district , in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district , southern Hesse. It was protected by ordinance of May 27, 1959 as a geological natural monument and bird sanctuary.

The natural monument "Felsenwiese am Kalkofen" is about 1.8 kilometers south of Ober-Klingen. The Loess Gorge borders on Hochwald in the north-east and runs in a south-westerly direction through the fields down the slope towards the Kohlbacher Hof. The Natura2000 area " FFH area grassland areas east of Brensbach " (6219-301) borders the natural monument in the south .
description
The loess hollow "Felsenwiese am Kalkofen" is about 600 meters long, 30 to 40 meters wide and eight to nine meters deep. A small stream rises from a spring in the gorge and flows through the hollow. In the area of a transverse causeway, the stream is led through a pipe. The gorge is densely overgrown with trees (pedunculate oaks, cherry trees, alders, quaking poplars, willows, also planted spruces) and various shrubs. In the edge area, common clematis overgrows the trees. In the herb layer, among other things, celandine , oneberry , woodruff and autumn crocus grow in places . Some strips of meadow adjacent to the side also belong to the protected area of 3.8 ha.
The area is an important breeding ground for numerous bird species. As a species of Red List of breeding birds in Germany were turtledove , backed Shrike , Golden Oriole and Partridge observed. In addition, come among other green woodpecker , nightingale , Spotted Flycatcher , Redstart and warbler species before.
