The Holmer Noor ( Danish : Holm Nor ) is an inland lake in the city of Schleswig that is connected to the Schlei ( Kleine Breite ) via the Schleswiger Mühlenbach . The Noor , which lies between the old town of Schleswig and the Freiheit , is named after the fishermen's quarter of Holm , which is immediately to the south and which was separated from the mainland by the Noor until the beginning of the 20th century.
The Noor, which was once navigable, was formerly a bulge of the Schlei, but was separated from the Schlei when Knud-Laward-Straße was built in 1936 and is now partially silted up . Particularly in the western region, the Noor is now mainly with Reet occupied and located by bush encroachment in a development to Niederwald . In the eastern area, however, the Noor is still recognizable as a body of water. The Noor was exposed to severe ecological pollution, for example as a building waste dump after the Second World War . In the meantime, however, the approximately 22 hectare site has been recognized as a Natura 2000 area , and there were plans to establish a nature experience area with hiking trails and a viewing platform on the fallow site . Numerous species of birds such as kingfisher and marsh harrier are native to the Holmer Noor .
