Wood lawyer

Holzrechtler (also Rechtler ) are residents of certain regions (eg. Lower Franconia : Gräfendorf , Rottendorf , Iphofen ), where the common law is entitled, in the forest of a municipality to beat burning or timber for their own use. They are only allowed to process undergrowth, branches and crowns , but not the trunks.

Where exactly the border between crown and trunk can be seen, there is always more and more disagreement.

In Iphofen, this is a tradition that goes back to the late Middle Ages. At first it was a personal right that was later transferred to certain houses in the old town. The regulation stipulated that access to the sometimes scarce resource wood could only be exercised by citizens and the firewood could only be used for their own use on site, the sale was a punishable offense. Years ago, the city of Iphofen failed when it tried to abolish the traditional but cumbersome timber law. However, since no new timber rights have been granted, the number of timber lawyers is de facto shrinking from year to year. In Iphofen, the city forester gives every wood lawyer two areas of 10 by 42 meters each in middle forests. By drawing lots it is determined who is allowed to participate. The wood must be fetched from the forest by the end of February.

The Bavarian State Commissioner Richard Mergner declared on behalf of the Bund Naturschutz that forest management by wood lawyers is “a form of culture that is worth protecting. The middle forests are substitute habitats for certain plant and animal species. ”The Grund-Schwalheim mill in Wetterau in the Markwald Berstadt had owned wood rights since the late Middle Ages, although the mill was not one of the markers in or out of the Markwald, namely the right to deliver the "Mel-" and the "basic tree". In the 18th century the miller was still entitled to the delivery of wood for the grinder , but this was subject to conditions.
