Wooden frame, which becomes a wooden panel through insulation, built-in components and subsequent planking

The wood panel construction , also known as wood panel construction, is a common wood construction of prefabricated houses . The flat, self-supporting wooden structures are called panels (comparable to the large panels in concrete construction). They represent the walls of the entire structure including all essential fixtures, are prefabricated in a factory and then assembled on the construction site .

The construction principle of timber panel construction corresponds to timber frame construction , but differs in the degree of prefabrication. The transition from the wooden panel construction to the wooden frame construction is fluid. The wooden panels consist of largely prefabricated, prefabricated elements that are planked on both sides. Depending on the choice of insulation materials , these can already be installed in the compartment or are introduced on the construction site after the elements have been installed.

construction

In the case of wooden panel construction, the wooden panels are first prefabricated and then assembled to form the structure after delivery to the construction site.

Prefabrication of the wooden panels

The wooden panels are composite structures made of ribs that are planked with different building materials, such as solid wood or wood-based materials , with the help of nails, staples or screws or glue .

According to their arrangement in the building as wall, ceiling or roof panels, the individual components and their building materials are sensibly combined and dimensioned so that they can take on load-bearing, stiffening, space-enclosing and / or building-physical functions (e.g. thermal insulation).

Joining the wooden panels

In the wooden panel construction, the spatial structure is composed of individual flat wooden panels.

In the production in the factory, large panels in building dimensions are assembled from individual panels, the sizes of which are determined by the standard formats of the cladding materials. The large panels are transported to the construction site and can be assembled to form the structure within a short time.

Building regulations

In terms of building law, wooden panels are a regulated building product in accordance with the Building Regulations List A, Part 1, Number 3.3.2.2

"Non-glued wall, ceiling and roof elements clad or planked on both sides, e.g. panel elements for wooden houses in panel construction" .

The usability of the construction product results from the compliance of the wooden panels with the technical rules and the constructional evidence. Manufacturers of wooden panels are subject to regular external monitoring by an officially recognized testing, monitoring and certification body. After a successful initial test, the manufacturing plant is given a certificate of conformity and the wooden panels must be marked with the mark of conformity . If the conformity mark is missing, the wooden panels cannot be used in terms of building law. According to the state building regulations, this is then an administrative offense, under private law a defect.

Comparison with other construction methods

(see also timber construction and prefabricated house )

Around 15% of single and two-family houses in Germany are now being built using timber, with an increasing tendency. The wooden panel construction plays an important role here. Their particular advantage lies among other things in the quick assembly on site and the weather-independent production of the wooden panels in the factory.

Furthermore, in contrast to the solid construction , it is a dry construction. Since the building envelope is immediately sealed after construction, the building is immediately wind and weatherproof. The dimensional accuracy and accuracy of the wooden panel construction is very high due to the high degree of prefabrication. There are both so-called type houses with a predetermined design, as well as completely individually variable building shapes. Various - especially Scandinavian - manufacturers almost exclusively manufacture individual houses.

Basically, timber-paneled houses are characterized by the fact that they are usually well insulated and therefore very energy-saving. As with other construction methods, modern building technology can also be installed, such as ventilation systems with heat recovery , heat pump heating , wood pellet heating or solar thermal systems . This results in energy consumption that falls below the requirements of the applicable Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV).
