Echinocactus texensis is a species of plant in the genus Echinocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Foreign language trivial names are "Candy Cactus", "Devil's Head Cactus", "Devil's Pincushion", "Horse Crippler Cactus", "Mancacaballo", "Monco Caballo" and "Viznaga".

Echinocactus texensis grows individually with flattened, spherical shoots that reach heights of 12 to 20 centimeters with diameters of up to 30 centimeters. There are 13 to 27 ribs . The dense, reddish thorns are conspicuously banded across, strong and tapered. The single, stiffly downwardly curved, flattened central spine is 3 to 7.5 centimeters long. It is always longer than the radial spines. The 5 to 7 spread, flattened radial spines are 2.5 to 5 centimeters long.

The light pink to white flowers have a red center. They reach lengths of 5 to 6 centimeters and the same diameter. When ripe, the fleshy, red fruits are 5 centimeters long and 2.5 to 3.8 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The range of Echinocactus texensis extends from the southern United States to the north and east of Mexico . The first description was published in 1842 by Carl Hopffer . A synonym is Homalocephala texensis (Hopffer) Britton & Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
