In New Zealand , homosexual acts were legalized in 1986. The age of consent is 16 years and is currently equal to the age of consent of heterosexuals .

In the island state of the Cook Islands, which is associated with New Zealand , homosexuality is illegal, while in Niue and Tokelau homosexuality was legalized in 2007.

Anti-discrimination laws

The sexual identity is legal in New Zealand since 1993 by the New Zealand Human Rights Act protected. The unequal treatment of people based on their sexual orientation is prohibited. Homosexual people are permitted for military service.

Recognition of same-sex marriages

In New Zealand, Registered Partnerships have been legal since 2004. The law was passed in Parliament on December 9, 2004. The rights and obligations are largely aligned with marriage, with the exception of the joint adoption of children. In August 2012, a bill on same-sex marriage was introduced to the New Zealand Parliament in first reading . In April 2013, the bill on same-sex marriage was passed with 77 votes to 44 in second reading. The bill came into force on August 19, 2013. This made New Zealand the 15th state to open marriage to same-sex couples. 33 gay and lesbian couples are said to have married on the same day.

Social situation

The largest gay scene is in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. Among other things, there are many facilities from the homosexual spectrum here. The travel guide Spartacus International Gay Guide listed Auckland as the 15th gayest city in the world in 2009. There are also major homosexual scenes in other cities like Wellington and Christchurch.
