history

To commemorate the granting of town charter to Żabbar by the last Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch, who resided in Malta, the building resembling a triumphal arch was built in 1801 . According to tradition, it is said to have been built on the spot where the citizens of Żabbar welcomed the Grand Master in 1797 for the patronage festival of the place.

Due to the difficult political situation in Malta at the time after the end of the French occupation, the originally intended coat of arms is missing.
