Honorat de Racan (born February 5, 1589 in Aubigné-Racan , † January 21, 1670 in Paris ) was a French writer and translator.

life and work

Honorat de Bueil, known as Marquis de Racan, grew up in the Manoir de Champmarin ( Aubigné-Racan , between Tours and Le Mans). At the age of 8 he lost his father, at 13 his mother. He went to court and became the king's page. As a favorite student of François de Malherbe , he wrote his only play in 1618, the shepherd's play Les Bergeries , which was a great success. From 1619 it was performed in the Hôtel de Bourgogne , from 1624 at the court. According to Pierre Voltz's judgment, it is still legible today.

In 1630 the "gentle Racan" retired to his castle La Roche-Racan (near Saint-Paterne-Racan in the Indre-et-Loire department ) and began his thirty years , motivated by the abbot of the nearby Cistercian monastery La Clarté-Dieu Translation of the Book of Psalms , “a monument to French poetry” (Jean-Pierre Chauveau).

Racan was a founding member of the Académie française from 1635 . Jean de La Fontaine was one of his admirers .
