Horace C. Grout
Horace Clyde Grout (born March 14, 1881 in Wausau , Wisconsin ; died October 10, 1950 in Montreal ) was a Canadian - American railroad manager. He was president of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line).
Life
The son of Horace A. Grout and Eva Shaughnessy attended the Northwestern Military Academy in Highland Park, Illinois and studied at the University of Wisconsin at Madison .
In 1898 Horace C. Grout began working as a surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) on the routes to the west. From 1903 he worked as an engineer in Montreal and was transferred to the operations department in 1909 and was initially Assistant Superintendent in West Toronto and Havelock (Ontario). From 1914 he was General Superintendent for the New Brunswick District and from 1920 in the same position in the Ontario District. So he was primarily responsible for the railroad traffic of the Canadian Pacific in these provinces. In 1934 he became assistant to the vice president.
In 1942 he became general manager for the western routes (Great Lakes-Pacific) based in Winnipeg . In 1944 he became the chief executive officer and president of the CPR-reorganized and majority-owned Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad. He stayed in this position until December 31, 1949 and was replaced by G. Allan MacNamara .
Horace C. Grout was married to Mary Eliza Curley since 1906. The couple had three children.
