The horizontal sword plant ( Echinodorus horizontalis ) is a marsh plant from the family of the frog-spoon plants (Alismataceae).

description

It is a medium to large and vigorously growing, perennial, herbaceous plant that forms rhizomes. The egg to heart-shaped leaves grow out of a rosette and place the leaf blades mainly horizontally. The upper side of the leaf is light green. The inflorescence is always longer than the leaves and prostrate. There are only a few flowers on 2 to 6 whorls. On the last or penultimate whorl, adventitious plants can form, which are used for vegetative reproduction.

Occurrence

The natural range of this plant species extends from Colombia to northern Brazil.

Like most other species of the sword plant genus , the horizontal sword plant is one of the popular aquarium plants . The horizontal sword plant is considered a plant for experienced aquarists. Its need for light is not particularly pronounced, but it does require medium to high temperatures. The nutrient requirement is very high and should be in the soil substrate. In the aquarium , this species thrives best at temperatures between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius. It is suitable as a medium, background and specimen plant. Aquariums should hold about eighty liters of water.
