The Hornafjörður is a fjord in the east of Iceland . It's there on the south coast.
It is located west of the village of Höfn and is almost separated from the open sea by the Suðurfjörur spit . The inner part of this fjord is called Hornafjörðurfljót and the two glacier rivers Austurfljót and Suðurfljót flow from the Hoffellsjökull glacier tongue in the east of Vatnajökull . The Hornafjörður and Hornafjörðurfljót together extend 15 kilometers into the country and are up to 4 kilometers wide. The ring road still has to go around the water, one thinks about a bridge through the fjord.
This fjord gave the municipality Hornafjörður its name. It fills the entire Austur-Skaftafellssýsla district .
