Coordinates: 33 ° 42 ' S , 151 ° 6' O Hornsby Shire is a Local Government Area (ger .: Local Government Area , in short LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . Hornsby belongs to the metropolis of Sydney , the capital of New South Wales. The area is the largest LGA in the city with 455 km² and has around 143,000 inhabitants.
Hornsby is located in northern Sydney, southwest of the Hawkesbury River about 20 km to 58 km northwest of the city center. The area includes 70 neighborhoods: Apple Tree Bay, Arcadia, Asquith, Beauty Point, Beecroft, Berowra, Berowra Heights, Berowra Waters, Berrilee, Bobbin Head, Brooklyn , Canoelands, Carlingford Court, Cheltenham, Cheltenham Heights, Cherrybrook, Collingridge Point, Cowan , Cowan Creek, Cowan North, Dangar Island, Epping Heights, Fiddletown, Fishermans Point, Forest Glen, Galston, Hawkesbury River, Hookhams Corner, Hornsby, Hornsby Heights, Hornsby Northgate, Hornsby South, Kangaroo Point, Laughtondale, Long Island, Lower Hawkesbury , Maroota North, Milson Island, Milsons Passage, Mount Colah, Mount Kuringgai, Normanhurst, Normanhurst West, North Epping, North Pennant Hills, Pearces Corner, Peats Ferry, Pennant Hills, Roselea, Singletons Mill, Thompsons Corner, Thornleigh, Waitara, Waitara East, Westleigh and parts of Carlingford, Castle Hill, Dural, Eastwood, Eastwood Heights, Epping, Epping West, Glenhaven, Glenorie, Maroota, Middle Dural, Round Corner, Wahroonga, West Pennant Hills and Wisemans Ferry. The Shire Council is located in the Hornsby district on the south-eastern edge of the LGA.

The Council of the Shire of Hornsby has ten members elected by the residents of the LGA. Three members each come from the three wards A, B and C, the chairman and mayor is also elected by all residents of the LGA. The three districts are determined independently of the districts.
