As one of the best in his class, he received a delegation to university in 1954, which he completed in 1959 as a graduate engineer. At the Eisenach automobile plant, he was initially employed in the main technology department and in 1961 became a research assistant to the director of technology. His tasks included numerous projects for the preparation of the Wartburg 353 car 1977 Head of the Public Relations and International Cooperation Department . In this function, he was a travel cadre and reported regularly on all rally and sporting events in Germany and abroad, in which representatives of BSG Motor Eisenach and the Eisenach motorsport team participated. During his professional career, he wrote the first non-fiction books for VEB Verlag Technik from 1963 on the subject of automobile construction and specifically on the products of the Eisenach automobile plant, the Wartburg and its predecessors, which were published in more than twenty editions and seven languages. Ihling published numerous articles on Eisenach vehicle construction as editor of the GDR magazine motor vehicle technology , and after 1989 also in automobile journals and magazines of the Federal Republic. After his retirement in 1991, which occurred at the same time as the closure of the Eisenach automobile plant, Ihling devoted himself entirely to researching the history of motor racing and Eisenach automobile construction.
