Horst Wachendorf

Horst Wachendorf (born October 29, 1935 in Sulingen ) is a German geologist whose main research areas are regional and structural geology .

Life

After graduating from high school in Diepholz , he studied geology at the universities of Göttingen and Vienna . After graduating from Göttingen in 1960, he received his doctorate in 1962. rer. nat. (Dissertation: Nature and origin of the sediments of the Westphalian seam empty ). He then became an assistant, later senior assistant, at the Institute for Geology and Paleontology at the TU Braunschweig . Here he completed his habilitation in 1970 (Habil. Writing: Rhyolites and basalts of the Lebombos in the hinterland of Lourenco Marques [Mocambique] ) and was awarded the Hermann Credner Prize in 1971 for this . In 1974 he was appointed professor . For several years he was managing director of what would later become the Institute for Geosciences, and in the meantime he was dean of the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences.

His research was based on geological recordings in the Harz Mountains, the Rhenish Slate Mountains and as part of activities abroad in Mozambique, South Africa, Greece and Jordan, primarily funded by the German Research Foundation. Regional, structural geological findings and their geodynamic interpretation as well as petrographic-palaeovulcanological analyzes were research priorities that were carried out in cooperation with Colleagues, undergraduate and graduate students were processed. When he left university in 2001, his students and colleagues honored him with a commemorative publication.
