Horston Castle , or Horeston Castle , is a ruined castle about 1.6 km south of the village of Horsley , which in turn is about 8 km north of the city of Derby , the capital of the English county of Derbyshire . The ruin is a Scheduled Monument and has been included in the '' Heritage-at-Risk '' register since 2008.

It is a Norman moth that Ralph de Buron had built in the 11th century. In the 13th century, King Johann Ohneland had a stone castle built in its place, which had a donjon , a chapel , a gatehouse and a barbican . In 1514 King Henry VIII gave them to the Duke of Norfolk as a reward for his services in the fight against the Scots . It later came into the possession of the Stanhope family .

Today the castle is in ruins, which was heavily damaged by the removal of building blocks. Remnants of the donjon are still visible, but mostly overgrown by plants.
