Hortonworks is a software company headquartered in Santa Clara , California . The company focuses on the development of Apache Hadoop and the associated other Apache projects. Hortonworks offers its own distribution of Hadoop and various extensions under the name Hortonworks Data Platform.
history
Hortonworks was founded in June 2011 as an independent software company. Hortonworks is a spin-off of Yahoo and was funded with capital from Yahoo and Benchmark Capital of $ 23 million. The company was named after the elephant Horton from the book Horton Hears a Who! named. Hortonworks hosts the Hadoop Summit developer conference . Since December 12, 2014, the company has been listed on NASDAQ under the ID HDP .
In October 2018, Hortonworks and Cloudera announced that they would merge as equal partners. The merger took place on January 3, 2019.
Products
Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) is based on Apache Hadoop and includes Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), MapReduce , Pig, Hive, HBase and Zookeeper , among others . This platform is used to analyze, store and process large amounts of data (see Big Data ). The current version 2.5 of Hortonworks Data Platform was released on June 28, 2016.
