The company first introduced its Hadoop distribution in 2009. At the same stage, there was a $ 5 million stake from Accel Partners . Tom Reilly has been CEO of Cloudera since 2013. In March 2014, Cloudera raised around 900 million US dollars in a further financing round, of which 740 million from Intel Capital, for which they received 18 percent of the shares and gave up their own Hadoop distribution. In 2016, Cloudera opened its first location in Germany (in Munich).

Cloudera offers a subscription model for its Hadoop distribution CDH (Cloudera's Distribution Including Apache Hadoop), with payment per node. More than three quarters of sales are generated through subscriptions. There are also IT services, training courses and certifications. In addition to MapReduce and the Hadoop Distributed File System, CDH offers features in the areas of cluster management, security, high availability and the integration of other hardware and software components. In October 2012, the development of Cloudera Impala , an open source query tool for Hadoop, was announced.

In October 2018, Cloudera and Hortonworks announced that they would merge as equal partners. The merger was completed in January 2019. Hortonworks shareholders received common shares of Cloudera.

The company brings together charity activities under the title Cloudera Cares . Software was donated to charity and 3900 hours of time were invested.
