Tania Wyn Mathias (born June 21, 1964 in Barnes, London ) is a British Conservative Party politician . The trained ophthalmologist moved into the House of Commons for Twickenham in May 2015 , but lost her seat again in 2017.

Life

Mathias grew up in her native Barnes, London . She attended St Paul's Girls 'School , a private girls' school in Hammersmith , London. Her grandfather, Fred Mathias , played rugby and cricket for Glamorgan and received the Military Cross in 1918 for his enemy flights over Belgium and France.

Mathias studied at St Catherine's College, Oxford , and Christ Church, Oxford , which she graduated from in 1988 with Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery.

After completing her training, Mathias worked for the United Nations Aid for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East in the Gaza Strip in the early 1990s . She also treated leprosy patients in northern Bihar , India, and southern China. She also worked for the National Health Service .

Political career

In 2010 Mathias was elected councilor for Hampton Wick in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames . She was re-elected in 2014, but resigned from office shortly after her election as MP.

In the 2015 general election, Mathias was elected for Twickenham in parliament, beating Vince Cable of the Liberal Democrats , who had previously held that seat for 18 years. Since July 2015 she has been a member of its Science and Technology Select Committee .

In the early parliamentary elections in 2017 , Mathias lost her seat in Twickenham again. Her predecessor Sir Vince Cable recaptured the constituency by almost 10,000 votes.

Positions

Mathias opposes further expansion of London Heathrow Airport .

In European politics, Mathias was against Brexit before the membership referendum in 2016 . On March 16, 2017, she was, alongside Alex Chalk, one of two Tories MEPs who, contrary to group discipline, voted to retain the rights of EU citizens currently living in the UK.
