Life

Friedrich Wilhelm joined the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps of the Prussian Army as a lieutenant , after having attended the educational institute of the Swiss pedagogue Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg in Hofwil with his brother for a few years .

The Prince's only son, besides his older brother, the Hereditary Prince, who survived childhood, died on horseback in a hunting accident.

Friedrich Wilhelm had fallen in love with his cousin Auguste von Solms-Braunfels. She was the daughter of his aunt Friederike von Mecklenburg-Strelitz , Queen of Hanover. There is even said to have been a secret engagement, which the prince surprisingly broke, which plunged Princess Auguste into depression and made Queen Friederike so angry that at times even the relationship with Friedrich Wilhelm's mother, her sister, was disturbed.

The deceased prince was buried in Regensburg at St. Emmeram in the princely crypt of the house of Thurn und Taxis.
