Paul III Anton entered the diplomatic service of the Austrian Empire, which also included the Kingdom of Hungary . As an Imperial and Royal Chamberlain, he was in contact with the most important personalities of the time. He often corresponded on friendly terms with State Chancellor Prince Klemens von Metternich and Prime Minister Prince Felix zu Schwarzenberg . As an envoy in Saxony and then in Great Britain , he acquired knowledge and experience in European diplomacy.

In 1833 his father Nicholas II died and Paul III. Anton became a majorate . He made his opponents in the Hungarian state parliament believe that he would now give up his diplomatic post, but remained as ambassador to Vienna at the court of St. James in London until 1842 .

Back in Vienna and now in the post of Hungarian minister at the imperial court camp, he wanted to appease the angry Hungarians striving for independence, but the anti-Habsburg climate grew stronger. When the situation came to a head in 1848 and the March Revolution broke out, the prince found himself in a great dilemma. On the one hand, he wanted to act for the benefit of his native Hungary and, on the other hand, still remain loyal to the Habsburgs. At the time, however, both were not possible. So he decided, like many of his ancestors, for the side of the Habsburgs and thus against the political currents in his homeland. He resigned from his position as Hungarian minister. As a result, Paul III lived. Anton outside Hungary. He did not live to see the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867.

Shortly before his death, the majorate was practically insolvent because the debt that had broken down with its predecessors had overwhelmed the family's fortunes. Franz Joseph I. arranged a compulsory settlement (sequestration) in 1865, which kept the respective majorate lords away from asset management until 1898.

His son Nicholas III. from his marriage to Maria Theresia, daughter of Prince Karl Alexander von Thurn und Taxis , which he entered into in 1812 , he succeeded him as majorate.
