Geographical location

The Hospital de los Reyes Católicos is located in Santiago de Compostela , the capital of the Autonomous Community of Galicia in Spain , on the north side of Obradoiro Square, where the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is also located.

history

1492 or 1499 the Royal Hospital (was Hospital Real ) from the Catholic Monarchs established with the task of pilgrims to accommodate and care for. The building contract was awarded in 1499. From 1512 the tasks of the hospital were performed in the then newly opened building, at the location that still exists today. It was the largest and best equipped pilgrims' hostel along the Way of St. James and had its own farm, doctors and pharmacy.

Since 1958 there has been a Parador , a five-star hotel with a restaurant , in the building . Nevertheless, as a museum, it can also be visited by those who do not live there.

Main entrance

Simple Renaissance forms meet late Gothic forms ("gótico florido"). The main portal to the square in the Plateresque style shows medallions of the donors, Isabella I and Ferdinand II , in the spandrels above the archway , as well as numerous figures of biblical figures arranged on five levels one above the other. The coats of arms of the royal couple were placed in large format next to the gate.

The building is two-story, the floor plan is rectangular and the wings are grouped around four also rectangular inner courtyards. The building was expanded in several steps to its present size. The architect was initially Enrique Egas . In the years between 1509 and 1512 he completed half of the building, namely the part that surrounds the two front courtyards. The wings around the two rear courtyards did not follow until the end of the 18th century. The architect here was Manuel de los Mártires . The facade to the square also dates from the end of the 18th century in its current form. The architect was Tomás Alonso . The late Gothic chapel of the hospital is located at the intersection of the four courtyards . It was built in 1527. The architect here was Juan de Alvas .
