On April 4, 1887, Josef Isele applied for permission to run a restaurant. This was to be built next to the train station of the Titisee station , which at that time was on the left side (seen in the direction of Donaueschingen) and was not moved to the other side of the tracks until 1915. Isele received his license to run an inn on May 2, 1888 and was able to open the "Bären" inn on May 19 of the same year. In 1890 he expanded the area on which his inn was located in order to be able to enlarge it. In 1896 his son-in-law Emil Dengler received approval to serve brandy .

After Josef Isele died, his heirs sold the plant in 1898 to the brewery director Louis Ganter and the privateer Otto Hüglin . A little later, in 1900, it passed into the possession of Adolf Guth. In 1903 the bear already had a telephone connection. From 1934 the house was run by Alfred Guth. Towards the end of the Second World War , the “bear” served as a camp for children who had been brought from Pforzheim to the Black Forest by the children's area . After the end of the war, the hotel was confiscated by the French occupation forces , who used it until 1949.

After that, Alfred Guth was able to take over and renovate the house again. It remained in the possession of the Guth family until 1970, who then sold it to Adam and Harald Sauter on April 1, 1970. Under their management, the parent company was renovated and modernized from 1976 to 1981. In 1982 the so-called forest wing was added. The entrance area was then converted, and in 1995 the former Vesperstube was converted into a wine tavern. In 1997 a two-storey wellness pavilion was added, and in 2004 Thomas and Stefan Sauter took over the management of the Hotel Bären. In 2005 the paint was renewed and in 2006 the restaurant was rebuilt.

The hotel has suffered multiple fires; At the end of 2011 the main building was badly damaged in a fire accident. In March 2012 it became known that the fire ruin had to be demolished. The demolition of the building began in mid-April 2012.

In autumn 2012, the operating family announced on their website that the hotel should be rebuilt. The wing of the forest, which largely survived the fire, is also to be redesigned in the course of the construction work. The groundbreaking ceremony was announced for November 2012. However, the start of construction was postponed. The start of operations was planned for early December 2013 or early January 2014. At the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2013, the target for the reopening was given in February 2014, which was corrected to June 2014 when the shell was completed at the end of 2013. Hotel operations were resumed on July 1, 2014, and the opening ceremony took place in November 2014.

Fires

Demolition of the Hotel (2012)

In the spring of 1901, a fire destroyed the utility building and the branch. In 1961 the hotel burned again; however, the owners and staff were able to control the flames before any major damage occurred.

On the evening of December 27, 2011, a fire broke out in one of the guest rooms, which severely damaged the old hotel, which was mainly made of wood. More than 200 firefighters tried to extinguish the fire or bring it under control, which succeeded after more than six hours. The extinguishing work lasted until the morning of the next day. There were also 65 members of the German Red Cross on site. At the time this fire broke out, there were 74 or more guests in the hotel. Some people were injured. According to initial estimates, the property damage amounted to a six-digit euro sum. The mayor of Titisee-Neustadt described the damage to the old house that characterizes the townscape as a catastrophe for Titisee-Neustadt.
