Hotel Castelar

The Hotel Castelar is a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located in the Montserrat district at the intersection of Avenida de Mayo and Avenida 9 de Julio .

The hotel was opened in 1928 as the "Hotel Excelsior", it was designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti . The Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca lived here from October 1933 to March 1934, when his play "Blood Wedding" was performed at the nearby Teatro Avenida . This room is now a museum. The hotel was also the site of the dramatic resignation of Carlos Álvarez on October 6, 2000, which led to the resignation of President Fernando de la Rúa a year later .
