The hotel is housed in a 14th century palazzo, centrally located on the Riva degli Schiavoni promenade , which opens onto the lagoon.

The hotel was founded in 1856 as an inn by an Austrian operator, whose descendants run the hotel in 2017 in the sixth generation. The famous guests are said to include the poet Franz Kafka and, more recently, author Cornelia Funke and director Wim Wenders .
