history

After the death of Kaiser Wilhelm I , Kaiser Wilhelm monuments were commissioned all over Prussia . A monument was planned at Porta Westfalica in a scenic location and carried out in 1892–1896. A prerequisite for the admiration of the emperor on a larger scale was the establishment of an appropriate infrastructure. Since August 1893 there was a railway connection from Minden with a small steam train , which in 1920 became an electric tram . The ascent to the monument could begin at the railway terminus at Porta . The Hotel Kaiserhof was finally built in time for the monument to be completed .

The foundation stone certificate from 1895 says: "The name of the emperor adorns this house at the foot of the mountain on which the monument of the immortalized great emperor Wilhelm will rise" . As part of the inauguration celebrations for the monument, a banquet was held on October 18, 1896 in the hotel's large hall.

During World War II the imperial court in 1944 by the SS confiscated and was part of the satellite camp of Neuengamme concentration camp in Porta Westfalica. Up to 1,300 forced laborers were interned here . After the Second World War, the hotel became part of the British Military Administration. It was released in 1950. The Goethe open-air theater Porta Westfalica is located in an old quarry in the immediate vicinity . In May 2011 bankruptcy was filed for the operation. The hotelier family had run the hotel since 1924.

Major fire in December 2011

Reconstruction of the Hotel Kaiserhof, February 2015
State July 2018

On the evening of December 7, 2011, a fire broke out in the vacant building, severely damaging the roof structure of the main building and completely destroying the central part of the building complex. Two people were slightly injured during the extinguishing work.

New Use Plans

In the years 2013 to 2015, the roof structure was rebuilt in a simplified form. In November 2018, the architect and co-owner Jörg Albersmeier presented plans for a renovation; these included apartments and offices and, in addition to the building, a shopping center, without which the renovation would not be economical. These plans were only partially approved by the city, and the shopping market was particularly contentious. The city of Porta attaches particular importance to monument protection and remembrance culture .

architecture

Arbor at the Hotel Kaiserhof

The hotel consists of a main building and an adjoining ballroom for up to 200 people. Parts of the house are under monument protection. The main building is a three-storey eaves-side structure with a bay on the left . While the outer front of the first floor consists of quarry stone facing, the second floor shows itself in decorative framework . The windows on the ground floor are arched, on the first floor with bottles, and on the second floor between the half-timbered stands as dormer windows with late Gothic tower attachments. The hipped roof is covered with black pans. The entrance portal has been modernized and there is a balustrade above it . On the south side of the building there is a three-cell grotto vault made of tuff stone with a large terrace garden above, which is bordered on the east and south side with a sandstone balustrade.

To the south of the hotel building there is an arbor with an axially symmetrical wooden construction with white paint. The arbor was equipped with retaining masonry on the western side of the mountain and is open to the east with a northern corner and central pavilion. The building was constructed almost at the same time as the hotel in 1895/1896.
