The Hotel Turismo is a hotel on Avenida Marginal , the eastern part of the coastal promenade of East Timor's capital, Dili .

history

The hotel opened in 1967 and became a meeting place for foreign correspondents, academics, agents and revolutionaries. Based on the feature film , the hotel's beer garden was generally called the Casablanca beer garden . The hotel had 49 rooms in two two-story blocks. The guest in room 31 was the journalist Roger East , who was captured by the attackers in the hotel during the 1975 invasion of Indonesia and later executed at the Dili shipyard .

When John Monjo , the American ambassador to Indonesia, traveled to Dili in January 1990 to investigate allegations of torture and arrests against the occupying forces, he was staying at the Hotel Turismo. The East Timorese took the opportunity and demonstrated for their independence three days in front of the hotel. Arrests and torture ensued.

In 2010, most of the old building was demolished and the Novo Turismo Resort and Spa was built for it. Only a few parts of the old hotel were integrated into the new building and the distinctive Art Deco sign was retained. The new hotel has 71 rooms, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, wellness area and conference room.
