La Hottée de Gargantua is a chaotic rock formation about ten meters high in the forest of Molinchart , west of Laon in the middle of the Aisne department in France . The group of eroded rocks consists of sandstone and was formed about 70 million years ago in the Tertiary . Gargantua is the name of a mythical giant that François Rabelais made famous in his novel cycle Gargantua and Pantagruel in the 16th century. Tradition has it that Gargantua shaped the landscape long before Rabelais recorded history.

There are dozens of menhirs and a dolmen named Les Palets de Gargantua in the Indre-et-Loire department .

Several legends tell the history of the place.
