Les Palets de Gargantua

The dolmen Les Palets de Gargantua (locally as "Pierre Levée" called) is a large (probably angevinischer) Dolmen of sandstone . It is located near Loches on the Champ de l'Ormeau, between Charnizay and Obterre about 2.0 km northeast of Charnizay in the Touraine in the southeast of the Indre-et-Loire department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The ceiling slab of the dolmen measures around 4.2 × 6.0 m and is said to weigh over 50 tons. It consists of three preserved panels: One lies on the floor, another is vertical and the ceiling panel leans on the vertical one.

The dolmen is associated with the legend of Gargantua . It says that Gargantua wanted to throw stones, which his wife had worn in her wedding apron, into a "ring" about 30 km away on the menhir of Civray-sur-Esves. The dolmen was saved from destruction by the prehistoric society of France and placed under protection.

There is the dolmen of the same name Palet-de-Gargantua in Torcé-en-Vallée in the Sarthe department ; and the one in a field west of Brizay (also Département Indre-et-Loire) and the menhir Quenouille de Gargantua .
