Howard Comfort

Howard Comfort (born June 4, 1904 in Haverford , Pennsylvania , † September 20, 1993 in Kennett Square , Pennsylvania) was an American classical archaeologist and classical philologist .

Howard Comfort, son of the Romanist and President of Haverford College William Wistar Comfort , studied at Haverford College ( BA 1924) and at Princeton University ( MA 1927). He spent 1927 to 1929 at the American Academy in Rome . In 1932 he received his doctorate from Princeton University. From 1932 to 1969 he taught as a professor of classical studies at Haverford College. His specialty was the research of the Roman terra sigillata . In 1957 he co-founded the Rei Cretariae Romanae Fautores , a scientific society for the study of Roman ceramics.

His son W. Wistar Comfort was a mathematician.
