Howard Estabrook (actually: Howard Bolles , born July 11, 1884 in Detroit , Michigan , USA , † July 16, 1978 in Los Angeles ) was an award-winning American screenwriter.

biography

Howard Estabrook got into show business at the age of 20. In New York he appeared as an actor in several plays. From 1914 he also worked as an actor in film. He sat on the director's chair five times. In 1917 Estabrook left the film industry and worked in business. In 1921 he returned to the film business and held various positions. In 1924 he produced a film himself for the first time.

Estabrook turned to screenplay writing in 1928. 50 of his scripts were filmed, two of these films he co-produced. 1930 he was together with his colleague Lenore J. Coffee for the screenplay of the drama Street of Chance (directed by John Cromwell , with William Powell and Kay Francis ) for an Oscar nomination . At the next Academy Awards in 1931 , he was able to receive the coveted statue for his screenplay of the western Pioneers of the Wild West (directed by Wesley Ruggles , with Richard Dix and Irene Dunne ). Until 1959 he was active as a screenwriter.

Howard Estabrook was married twice. He died on July 16, 1978 at the age of 94.
