Hoya latifolia is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). The species has a large distribution area that extends from Myanmar through southern Thailand , Malaysia to Indonesia .

features

Hoya latifolia makes long shoots and becomes very large. The young shoots are deep red in color. The leaves have a 6 to 12 mm long, strong stem. The relatively very large leaf blades are fleshy-succulent and measure 10 to 25 cm in length and 7 to 17 cm in width. They are round to elliptical and long pointed at the outer end. The base is rounded to heart-shaped. They are glossy green with individual white spots on the upper side and deep red on the lower side. The five clearly visible leaf veins are very characteristic of this species.

The upright inflorescence includes up to 40 flowers (up to 70 flowers, up to 200 flowers), which are arranged spherically. The stalk of the inflorescence is about 5 cm long, relatively thick and stiff. The single flower has a diameter of 8 mm. The flower stalk is about 2 cm long, relatively thin and covered with short, downy hair. The relatively very small sepals are egg-shaped and taper to a point. The corolla is whitish to brownish yellow and finely hairy inside. The corolla lobes are egg-shaped, tapering to a point and bent back when the flower has fully bloomed. The flowers stay open for about 6 days and have an intense scent. The corolla is white, creamy white or slightly pink with egg-shaped corolla lobes. The outer extension is flattened and pointed, the inner extension is also pointed and ascending. The flowers stay open for about 6 days and smell strongly of musk, especially in the evening. The pollinia are 0.35 mm wide and winged. The corpusculum is angular and measures about 0.15 mm. The follicles are spindle-shaped, 7.5 cm long and 0.5 cm thick. The surface is hairy slightly downy.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

According to Richard E. Rintz (1978), Hoya latifolia resembles Hoya verticillata var. Citrina (Ridl.) Kloppenb in terms of vegetative characteristics .

Geographical distribution

The distribution area of this species extends from Myanmar over southern Thailand , Malaysia to Indonesia .

Taxonomy

Hoya latifolia was first described in 1834 by Georg Don in the 4th volume of his "General History of the Dichlamydeous Plants" (on p. 127). The type locality is Penang (Malaysia), the type specimen was collected by Nathaniel Wallich . Hoffmann, van Donkelaar and Albers name the following synonyms for the species: Hoya macrophylla Wight (1834, nom. Illeg.), Hoya polystachya Blume and Hoya latifolia subsp. kinabaluensis C.M. Burton .
