Gary Neal (born October 3, 1984 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a former American basketball player who was active in the US professional league NBA for six years .

Career

High school and college

Neal initially played for La Salle University . In his freshman season there, he became an important part of his team, he scored 18.6 points with a hit rate of 40% from the field and was voted Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year for his performance .

In June 2004, however, Neal was charged with rape along with fellow player Michael Cleaves . The case turned into a scandal as the head coaches of the university's two basketball teams, Billy Hahn (men) and John Miller (women), were accused of having been briefed on another alleged sexual assault the year before, but neither to have told the police to the university management. Both coaches eventually had to give up their offices. Neal himself was acquitted, but had previously been released from La Salle University.

After his time at La Salle University, he moved to Towson University . In his last two years of college he was able to achieve an average of 26.1 and 25.3 points per game, but was still not selected in the 2007 NBA draft .

He then moved to Turkey, and then again to the top European club FC Barcelona , where he played weakly. He then moved to Pallacanestro Treviso , where he improved again and was elected to the All-Eurocup Second Team of the 2008/09 season . After moving to CB Málaga , his performance remained good, so the San Antonio Spurs signed him.

NBA

In his first season there he was able to reach over 9 points in 21 minutes per game and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

Before the 2013-14 season , he joined the Milwaukee Bucks as a free agent . There, however, he could not convince athletically as hoped. In February 2014 he was transferred from the Bucks to the Charlotte Hornets .

In 2014/2015, Neal initially played for the Hornets. In February 2015, however, he was transferred from the Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves via Trade .

In summer 2015, he moved to the Washington Wizards . There he played until the end of the 2015/16 NBA season .

As of 2016

In December 2016, Neal signed a contract with the Westchester Knicks from the NBA G League . On January 2, 2017, they transferred him to the Texas Legends as part of an exchange deal . After a short contract ( 10-day contract ) with the Atlanta Hawks from the NBA on January 18, 2017, he moved back to the G-League for the Legends. On January 30th 2017 it was traded again, this time to the Reno Bighorns (G-League).

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Neal signed with Basket Saragossa from the Spanish ACB league . After an average of 22.7 points and 4 assists in three games in November, he was named Player of the Month. At the end of the season he was third in the voting of the Most Valuable Player of the ACB League.

In December 2018 he moved to the Turkish club Banvit BK , where he was active until the end of the season. He then began his coaching career.
