Hoya samoensis is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya samoensis is a perennial , twisting, climbing plant, the thread-like shoots of which can be several meters long. The shoots measure up to 3 mm in cross section and have short adherent roots along the internodes. The leaves are stalked, the stems are 0.7 to 1 cm long. The leaf blades are elliptical-ovate and 7 to 10 cm long, with a width of up to 3.5 to 4 cm. They are thick, fleshy to succulent, green to yellow-brown in color and glabrous. The margins are full and not bent back. The base is heart-shaped, the apex pointed to pointed. The leaf nerve consists of five leaf veins that (almost) emanate from the base. The middle leaf vein and the inner pair of leaf veins are connected to one another by transverse leaf veins. All vegetative parts secrete a white milky juice when injured.

The umbel-shaped inflorescence contains 8 to 25 individual flowers. The top is convex or hemispherical. The peduncle is 2.5 to 3.8 cm long. The flower stalks are about 1.5 to 2 cm long. The greenish-yellow to apricot-colored corolla has a diameter of 10 to 15 mm. The base of the petals is fused. The bare petal lobes are weakly or strongly bent back. They are elongated, egg-shaped, 6 to 7 mm long and 4 to 4.5 mm wide (at the base). The secondary crown is whitish with elliptical to rounded rhombic tips. The apex is blunt-rounded. The pollinia are elongated, 600 µm long in the subspecies savaiiensis , max. 180 µm wide with an outer hyaline margin. The caudiculae are 80 µm quite short. The rhombus-shaped corpusculum is comparatively very small with a length of 100 µm and a width of 70 µm. The flower smells only weakly or not at all.

Similar Art

Hoya samoensis is very similar (if not identical; see taxonomy) to Hoya cominsii . It is distinguished by the slimmer leaves and the wedge-shaped base of the leaves.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs on the Samoa archipelago . The habitat are open tropical forests.

Taxonomy

The taxon was proposed by Berthold Carl Seemann in 1868 . However, the description is very short and diagnostically insufficient. The type specimen, collected by a Powell, is said to be in the herb. Hook. are located. Often, Hoya cominsii is considered a synonym of Hoya samoensis by the Solomon Islands . However, Kew Science - Plants of the World lists both species as valid taxa online. Currently the species is divided into two subspecies:

  • Hoya samoensis subsp. samoensis Seem.
  • Hoya samoensis subsp. savaiiensis Kloppenb. The inflorescence and flower stalks are significantly longer. The inside of the petal tips are smooth.
